Somerset County United Way hosted a blood drive for the American Red Cross Greater Somerset County Chapter, Friday, March 7th at which 19 donors from United Way and our neighboring companies in the 1011 Route 22 West office building. The drive led to a total of 57 pints of blood being collected.

A few facts about the need for blood provided by the American Red Cross: 9 out of 10 people in New Jersey will need blood at least once and 1 donation can help up to 3 people in need.

Every three seconds someone in our country needs blood – a friend, a family member or maybe even you. That means by the time you finish reading this page, twenty people will have needed blood or blood products. There is no substitute for blood, and only you can give this precious gift of life. Did you know that your single blood donation can save up to three lives?

Did you know that 65% of us are eligible to donate blood, but yet nationwide only 5% of those who can give blood actually donate? Here in New Jersey, the statistics are even worse. Just 2% of eligible donors in New Jersey give blood.

Giving blood is a simple and safe process that takes less than one hour of your time. In that hour, you will not only be saving lives, but you will also be helping the Red Cross. Our Blood Program helps to support the important work of the Greater Somerset County Chapter and the essential community services that we bring to you and neighbors here in Somerset County.
