Somerset County United Way hosted a blood drive for
the American Red Cross Greater Somerset County Chapter, Friday,
March 7th at which 19 donors from United Way and our neighboring
companies in the 1011 Route 22 West office building. The drive led
to a total of 57 pints of blood being collected.
A few facts about the need for blood provided by the
American Red Cross: 9 out of 10 people in New Jersey will need blood
at least once and 1 donation can help up to 3 people in need.
Every three seconds someone in our country needs blood – a friend,
a family member or maybe even you. That means by the time you finish
reading this page, twenty people will have needed blood or blood
products. There is no substitute for blood, and only you can give
this precious gift of life. Did you know that your single blood
donation can save up to three lives?
Did you know that 65% of us are eligible to donate blood, but yet
nationwide only 5% of those who can give blood actually donate?
Here in New Jersey, the statistics are even worse. Just 2% of eligible
donors in New Jersey give blood.
Giving blood is a simple and safe process that takes less than
one hour of your time. In that hour, you will not only be saving
lives, but you will also be helping the Red Cross. Our Blood Program
helps to support the important work of the Greater Somerset County
Chapter and the essential community services that we bring to you
and neighbors here in Somerset County.
