Women Building Community and Empowering Lives

Somerset County United Way launched its Women’s Initiative in 2000.  Its intent was to explore what resources women can bring to bear, financial and non-financial, to influence issues in our community.

The Mission: The mission of the initiative is empowering women to enable them to meet their basic needs.

The Women's Initiative furthers its mission through three focus areas:

  • Volunteerism: Promote opportunities for women to volunteer together and with their families.  Quarterly group projects are offered.  Projects have included food collection drives, sorting of donated coats in preparation for distribution to needy families, landscaping at a women’s drug and alcohol treatment program, and painting at a health care agency serving low-income women. (click here for Upcoming Projects)

  • Fundraising:  The initiative’s seventh fundraising event was held in April 2009.  Projects funded include:  women's job seekers support project; saftey fence at a domestic violence safe house; educational and healthy recreational activities for women in recovery from addiction to drugs and/or alcohol; life skills and support for at-risk adolescent girls; purchase of personal care products and undergarments for low-income women in th ejob search process; parenting program for families at risk of substance abuse; and transportation to physical and mental health services for women in early recovery from alcoholism and drug abuse. For more details, click here.
